Fixed vs Mechanical Broadheads: Which to Shoot
Shoot mechanicals if your bow is fast, your arrow is in the 400 to 500 grain range, and you want heads that fly with your field points with minimal tuning. Shoot fixed blades if your arrow is heavy, your energy margin is modest, you hunt larger or tougher animals, or your state restricts expandables. A well tuned bow can shoot either well.
This argument is older than carbon arrows and mostly generates heat rather than light, because the two designs solve different problems. A mechanical buys you flight at the cost of energy. A fixed blade buys you reliability and penetration at the cost of tuning time. Which trade is right depends almost entirely on your arrow weight, your bow, and what you are hunting.
The verdict
Run a mechanical if you shoot a modern compound over roughly 280 fps with a total arrow weight of 400 to 500 grains, you hunt whitetail-sized animals, and you want a head you can sight in quickly with confidence. This describes most compound hunters, which is why expandables dominate the market.
Run a fixed blade if any of these apply: your setup is a traditional bow or a lower draw weight compound, your arrow is over 500 grains and you are already trading speed for momentum, you hunt elk or larger, you hunt where expandables are restricted, or you want a head with no moving parts to fail in cold, mud, or after a brushed shot.
The bad answer is picking a mechanical to avoid tuning your bow. An untuned bow with a mechanical is still an untuned bow, and it will show up at longer distances and in wind. Fix the tune first, then choose the head you actually want.

Why fixed blades fly differently
A broadhead sits at the very front of the arrow, the point furthest from the fletching that is trying to steer it. A fixed blade presents surface area there, so any imperfection in arrow flight gets amplified rather than corrected. If your nock travel is off, your rest is misaligned, or your arrow spine is wrong, the fixed head will find it and print the error on your target.

Why mechanicals cost you penetration
Two separate losses happen. First, the blades must be pushed open against a spring, an o-ring, or friction, and that energy comes out of the arrow. Second, a wider cut simply requires more work to drive through, which is the same reason a 2 inch head penetrates less than a 1.5 inch head of the same design.
On a 480 grain arrow from a 70 pound bow this is comfortably absorbed. On a 350 grain arrow from a 50 pound bow it is not. Safety note: whatever head you choose, never drop below 5 grains per pound of draw weight in total arrow weight. Broadheads are also genuinely sharp: use a broadhead wrench, keep a quiver hood on them, and never shoot them into a foam target not rated for it.
Hybrid and single-bevel options
The market is no longer just two camps. Hybrid heads pair a fixed main blade with deployable bleeder blades, aiming to keep some of the mechanical's cut with a fixed head's reliability. Single-bevel fixed heads grind one side of each edge so the arrow rotates on impact, a design favoured by heavy-arrow and traditional shooters for bone performance.
Both are legitimate. Both also behave like fixed heads in flight, which means tuning still matters. Treat them as fixed blades for the purposes of the decision above, and be aware that single-bevel heads want a matching fletching direction to avoid fighting the arrow's spin.
Ethics and regulation
Broadhead choice is an ethics question before it is a gear question. A head that will not group at the distance you intend to shoot is the wrong head regardless of design. Set a personal maximum range based on where your broadhead groups shrink, not where your sight has a pin. If your fixed heads open groups at 40 yards, your maximum is inside that.
On the legal side, several jurisdictions restrict expandables outright, and others set a minimum cutting width or require a fixed number of blades. Some also require broadheads to be steel or to be a certain minimum diameter. These change, so read the current regulations for the state or province you are hunting rather than trusting a forum post. - Weigh every head. Variation between heads in a pack shifts point of impact.
- Spin test each assembled arrow. A wobble means a bent insert, a crooked head, or a bad shaft.
- Shoot one practice head of the same model and weight, and keep hunting heads untouched.
- Confirm point of impact at every distance you would take, not just at 20 yards.
- Match head weight to your FOC target: heavier heads raise front of centre and weaken dynamic spine.
