Helical vs Straight Fletching: Which to Use

Fletching is the cheapest tuning variable on the whole arrow and the one most people never touch. The choice is simple to state: more helical means more spin, more stability, and a small speed cost. Straight means less drag and less correction. Which you want is determined mostly by what is on the front of the arrow.

The verdict

Run helical if you shoot fixed blade broadheads, a heavy point, or a high front of centre build. Those all put steering force at the front of the arrow, and helical is how you put more corrective authority at the back. If your fixed heads and field points do not group together and your bow tunes clean, increasing helical is one of the highest-value fixes available.

Run offset if you want a single arrow setup that handles field points, mechanicals, and occasional fixed heads. Offset spins the arrow without the vane curving off the shaft, so it clears more rest types and costs less speed than a full helical.

Run straight if you shoot indoor target with field points only, or you shoot a Whisker Biscuit and want your vanes to survive. Straight fletching is the fastest and the least forgiving, which is a reasonable trade when nothing on the front of the arrow is fighting you.

What spin actually does

A spinning arrow averages out asymmetries. Any imperfection in the shaft, the insert, or the broadhead pushes the arrow one way, and rotation converts that steady push into a small circle rather than a growing deflection. That is the same reason rifling exists, applied to a much slower and much lighter projectile.

Spin is not free. Turning the arrow costs energy, and the angled vanes create drag whether or not they are correcting anything. Over 30 yards this is small. Over 80 yards it is measurable. Since almost all bowhunting happens inside 50 yards, the trade favours stability for hunters and favours speed for long-distance target shooters, which is exactly how the two disciplines have settled.

Matching fletching to your broadhead

The front of the arrow and the back of the arrow are in a tug of war. A fixed blade broadhead has surface area at the extreme front, so it can steer the arrow in whatever direction it is pointing at launch. The fletching's job is to overpower that steering and pull the arrow straight, and it needs enough surface and enough spin to win.

Practically that means: three vanes of 4 inches with a strong helical for a large fixed head, or 2 inch vanes with a slight offset for a compact mechanical. Rest clearance is the constraint people hit

A full helical vane curves off the shaft, which means it needs room. On a Whisker Biscuit the bristles comb that curve on every shot, flattening vanes and shortening their life considerably. On a drop away rest, timed correctly, there is no contact at all and helical is entirely free of that penalty.

This is the underrated reason to run a drop away: not the tune itself, but the fletching freedom it unlocks. If you are committed to a Biscuit, use offset with a stiff vane and accept slightly less correction, or use feathers, which pass through bristles better but are far less weatherproof.

Weight, FOC, and the numbers side

Vanes are at the very back of the arrow, so vane choice moves front of centre in the opposite direction from a heavier point. Going from three 2 inch vanes to three 4 inch vanes adds mass behind the balance point and lowers FOC, which is worth accounting for if you are building to a target. Practical setup notes

  • Clean the shaft with alcohol before fletching. Most vane failures are contamination, not glue.
  • Change one variable at a time. Fletching and rest changes together tell you nothing.
  • Confirm clearance with powder or lipstick on the vanes before you decide the tune is done.
  • Keep all arrows in a set identical. Mixed fletch styles in one quiver produce mixed groups.
  • Feathers stabilise more per unit of surface and forgive contact, but they are useless soaked.
  • Re-check point of impact after any fletching change, at every distance you shoot.
