Heavy vs Light Arrows: Which Weight Should You Shoot?

Arrow weight is the single tuning variable that changes everything downstream: speed, trajectory, energy, noise, and how the bow feels in your hand. The debate looks like speed versus penetration, but the useful framing is different. Light arrows buy forgiveness of distance error. Heavy arrows buy forgiveness of everything else.

The verdict

Go heavy if you hunt. A 425 to 500 grain total arrow from a modern compound gives up 30 to 50 fps against a light build and returns quieter shots, less hand shock, more momentum, and better performance if you hit something you did not intend to. Since you should be ranging every shot anyway, the trajectory cost is manageable.

Go light if you shoot 3D or unknown distance target. When a yardage guess is the main error source, a flat trajectory shrinks the penalty for guessing wrong. That is a scoring advantage that does not exist in hunting, where you have a rangefinder and time.

Energy versus momentum

These two numbers get used interchangeably and they should not be. Kinetic energy is grains x fps² / 450,240, so it scales with the square of speed and therefore rewards light, fast arrows. Momentum is grains x fps / 225,218, scaling linearly with both, which rewards mass.

For a projectile that has to keep moving through resistance, momentum is the better predictor. The 5 grain per pound floor is not negotiable

Every arrow weight conversation has to start here. Total arrow weight must be at least 5 grains per pound of your bow's peak draw weight. A 60 pound bow needs 300 grains minimum, a 70 pound bow needs 350. Below that, too much stored energy stays in the limbs rather than leaving with the arrow, which is functionally a partial dry fire.

The consequences are cracked limbs, damaged cams, a voided warranty, and in a bad case a bow that comes apart at full draw.
