Bag vs Block vs 3D Target: Which Should You Buy?

Buy a layered foam block if you shoot broadheads, or if you want a target you can leave outside and shoot from multiple sides. How each type stops an arrow

Layered targets wear out where you shoot most, so rotating faces genuinely extends life.

A 3D target is usually self-healing open cell foam moulded into an animal shape, with a denser replaceable core in the vital area. The body foam is soft enough to pull from and the core takes the concentrated abuse. Cores are the consumable, and a replacement core typically costs a meaningful fraction of the whole target.

Arrow speed is the spec people ignore

Every target carries a maximum arrow speed rating, commonly around 350 fps for consumer targets. Shoot a faster arrow into it and the arrow buries deeper than the design intends, which makes removal a fight and shortens the target's life considerably.

Check your real speed, not your bow's IBO rating. IBO is measured at a 30 inch draw, 70 pounds, and a 350 grain arrow, which is faster than almost anyone actually shoots. A large bag target is safer for a beginner for exactly this reason: the face is big enough that early misses still hit the target. If you must practise in a confined space, add a hanging backstop curtain or a second bag behind the primary target, and never shoot with anything of value in the overshoot zone.   • Rotate the aim point. Stacking arrows into one spot destroys a target fast and can also damage arrows.
  • Rotate the whole target. Blocks are shootable on four to six faces. Use them all.
  • Keep bags dry. Wet fill compacts, moulds, and stops working. Bring it in or cover it.
  • Use an arrow puller. Twisting a shaft with bare hands damages both the target and, over time, the fletching.
