How to Install a Peep Sight Correctly
Set peep height by drawing with your eyes closed, then opening them at a natural anchor and marking where your eye actually lands. Install it in a bow press, serve it in place so it cannot move, and check rotation at full draw before rechecking your 20 yard zero.
A peep sight is a rear aperture, and its only job is to make your eye position repeatable. If your peep is at the wrong height, you will unconsciously move your head to find it, which moves your anchor, which moves your point of impact. That makes peep placement one of the few setup jobs where a quarter inch genuinely matters.
Why a press matters here
The peep sits between separated string strands. To separate them properly you have to relieve tension, which means a bow press. Forcing a peep in with a string separator on a strung bow is common and it is a bad habit: it stresses individual strands, disturbs the serving, and produces an installation that migrates.
A pro shop will press the bow, split the strands evenly so an equal number sits on each side, place the peep, and then serve above and below it so it cannot move. That serving step is what people usually mean when they say a shop peep stays put and a home peep does not.
Safety: never improvise a bow press. Compound limbs store enormous energy even at brace, and a limb that escapes an improvised jig causes serious injury. Never draw a bow with an unserved peep to test it, because a peep that shifts under load can come loose at full draw.
Finding the right height
Height is determined by your anchor, not by a measurement. The reliable procedure:
- Set draw length correctly first. If it is wrong, your anchor is wrong and so is the peep. Check with the draw length guide.
- With the peep loosely in place, come to full draw with your eyes closed.
- Settle into your natural anchor with the string touching your nose and the corner of your mouth.
- Open your eyes without moving your head at all.
- Note where the peep sits relative to the sight housing. A helper marking the string with a pen at the correct position is easier than trying to hold and mark yourself.
- Repeat three times. If the marks vary by much, your anchor is not yet consistent and the peep will need resetting later.
The temptation to set the peep where it feels comfortable while consciously looking through it is exactly what you are trying to avoid. The whole point is to place it where your eye already goes.

The trade is straightforward: a small aperture aligns more precisely with your sight housing because there is less slop between the two circles, and a large aperture lets you see at dawn. Hunters overwhelmingly benefit from the larger sizes, because the moment you most need to see through the peep is the moment there is least light. Target archers shooting under controlled lighting benefit from the smaller ones.
Rotation, and why peeps do not line up
The string twists as it comes to full draw. A peep is served in at a position that accounts for that twist, so it faces your eye squarely at full draw and looks rotated at rest. That is normal and correct.
When a peep starts turning away from your eye at full draw, the string has settled or crept. This is very common in the first few hundred shots on a new string set. The fix is adding or removing twists in the string, which requires a press and also changes axle-to-axle length and draw length slightly, so it should be followed by a tune check. A rubber tube is the shortcut, and it is the wrong answer for the reasons in the FAQ below: tubing degrades, especially in cold and UV, and it fails toward your face.
After installation
Installing a peep touches the string, which touches everything. Work through this short list before you trust your marks:
- Recheck nocking point. Serving added above and below the peep can shift it slightly.
- Recheck the paper tear. Two or three arrows through the paper frame confirms nothing moved.
- Recheck 20 yard zero. Peep height changes your sight picture even if nothing mechanical moved. Follow the sight-in procedure.
- Mark the peep position. A dot of paint pen on the serving above the peep makes migration obvious.
Common peep problems and fixes
- You duck your head to see through it. Peep is too high. Lower it and reset.
- You raise your chin or lift your head. Peep is too low, or draw length is too long. Check draw length first, because it is the more common root cause.
- Peep is dark at first light. Move to a larger aperture. This is the single most common in-season complaint and it is a five minute shop fix.
- Sight housing does not fill the peep circle. Either move the sight further from the riser or use a smaller aperture. A housing that fills the peep is the fastest alignment reference available.
- Blurry peep with good eyesight otherwise. Consider a clarifier or a verifier lens, chosen to match whether you use a magnified sight.

Tubeless is the standard now. Does the peep change my tune?
