Crossbow vs Compound Bow: Which Should You Hunt With?
Choose a crossbow if you want a shorter learning curve, have a shoulder or strength limitation, hunt from a blind, or have limited practice time: it is aimed from a rest and fired with a trigger. Choose a compound if you want the full archery challenge, want a cheaper and lighter setup, hunt seasons where crossbows are restricted, or value the ability to draw and shoot from any position. These are not really the same activity. A crossbow is a shoulder-fired weapon that shoots arrows. A compound is an archery discipline. That framing settles most of the argument: if you want the shooting to be the skill, shoot a compound, and if you want the hunting to be the skill, a crossbow removes a lot of practice from the equation. Both are legitimate, and in many states legality decides for you.
The verdict
Buy a crossbow if you have a shoulder, back, or strength limitation, you have very little time to practise, you hunt from a blind where a rest is available, you are introducing an older or younger hunter who cannot manage a bow draw, or your state allows them freely and you value the ease. The learning curve to a lethal, ethical standard is measured in days rather than months.
Buy a compound if you want archery as a skill you develop, you hunt seasons or states where crossbows are restricted, you hunt on foot and want a lighter tool, you shoot 3D or target as well as hunting, or you want the cheaper long-term setup. A compound is also far quieter to practise with in a backyard, which matters more than people expect.
The one bad reason to buy a crossbow is believing it extends your ethical range dramatically. It does not. Bolt flight time at 60 yards is long enough that an animal can react, and the accuracy limits are the same human limits that apply to any shot.

Energy is not the same as effective range

The limits on ethical range are set by how tightly you group, how far an animal can move in the flight time, and how accurately you judged the distance. None of those improve with energy. In fact a crossbow's noise signature is generally louder than a well set up compound, so the animal reaction problem is at least as bad. The practice difference is the honest crossbow advantage
A compound requires you to build and maintain a repeatable shot: anchor, back tension, release execution, and the ability to do all of it while an animal watches. That takes consistent practice, and a hunter who shoots twenty arrows a year with a compound is not equipped to take an ethical shot.
A crossbow shooter with the same twenty shots is in much better shape, because the machine holds the tension and the trigger does the work. Sighting in is a scope process rather than a form process, and it stays sighted in. For someone with limited time who wants to hunt responsibly, that is a serious argument and it is why crossbow adoption has grown so quickly.
What crossbows demand that bows do not
Clearance. A crossbow has wide limbs that must be clear of the blind wall, the tree, and the rail before firing. Firing into an obstruction destroys the bow and can injure the shooter. Anyone shooting from a blind or a stand needs to think about that geometry in advance.
Finger discipline. Your forward hand must stay below the rail and out of the string path. This is the most common crossbow injury and it is entirely preventable.
String maintenance. Crossbow strings take enormous load and need waxing on a schedule and replacement on a press at manufacturer-specified intervals. Never dry fire a crossbow, and never de-cock by firing into the air. Use a discharge bolt into a rated target or a de-cocking mechanism if the bow has one.
Weight. Six to nine pounds is a lot to carry and a lot to hold offhand, which is why crossbows are shot from a rest whenever possible.
Legality is the deciding factor for many hunters
Crossbow rules differ dramatically. Some states allow them throughout archery season for everyone. Some restrict them to hunters with a physician-certified disability. Some allow them only in later seasons or only during firearms seasons. Minimum draw weight and minimum bolt length requirements also appear in many regulations, as do broadhead width rules.
These are revised often, so read the current regulations booklet for the state you intend to hunt before you spend money. If you hunt multiple states, a compound has the advantage of being legal in every archery season everywhere, which is not a small consideration.
Bolts, arrows, and why the components differ
Crossbow bolts are shorter, stiffer, and use nock designs specific to the bow, often a moon nock or a flat nock that must be oriented correctly to the rail. Using the wrong nock can cause a dry fire. Bolt spine and length are dictated by the manufacturer rather than calculated, which removes a lot of the tuning freedom a compound shooter enjoys.
