How to Fletch Arrows: Jig Setup to Finished Vane
Clean the fletch area with alcohol, set your jig for 2 to 3 degrees of offset or a helical clamp, glue one vane at a time with a thin even bead, and index every arrow the same way. Fixed-blade broadheads need helical or high offset to steer, field points do not.
Fletching is the steering system of an arrow, and it is also the part most likely to be done inconsistently. Vanes that vary in angle or position from arrow to arrow produce a set that cannot group, no matter how well the bow is tuned. The goal of a fletching session is not beautiful arrows, it is twelve arrows that are indistinguishable from each other.
Choosing the configuration first
Decide these four things before you set the jig, because changing your mind halfway produces a mismatched set.
- Vane count. Three is standard. Four gives more steering for large fixed blades and more clearance options.
- Vane length. 2 to 3 inches for hunting, 1.75 to 2.25 inches for target, 4 to 5 inch feathers for traditional setups shot off the shelf.
- Offset or helical. Helical for fixed-blade broadheads, offset for field points and mechanicals.
- Wrap or bare shaft. A wrap makes gluing and re-fletching much easier at the cost of 6 to 12 grains at the rear.

Preparing the shaft
Wipe the rear four inches of the shaft with rubbing alcohol on a lint-free cloth and let it dry completely. Carbon shafts carry a mold release film and dust from cutting, and glue does not bond through either. This single step is responsible for the majority of vanes that peel at the leading edge after 20 shots.
If you are applying a wrap, do it now. Line the wrap up square with the nock, roll it on without trapping air, and press the seam down firmly. If you are fletching directly on carbon, some builders lightly scuff the surface with fine abrasive, which helps but is not essential if the alcohol prep is thorough. Many vane bases also need a primer pen, particularly slick synthetic materials.
Setting the jig
Mount the shaft in the jig with the nock indexed the way you intend to shoot it. On a three vane setup this means deciding whether the odd vane, often called the cock vane, points away from the riser or up. Both are used, but you have to be consistent because it determines clearance.
Set the clamp angle to your chosen offset. Dry-fit one vane in the clamp against the shaft before applying any glue and check three things: that the vane sits at the same distance from the nock throat on every position, usually about a quarter to a half inch, that the base contacts the shaft along its full length, and that the clamp is not lifting the trailing edge. With a helical clamp on a small diameter shaft, watch for the ends lifting, which is the most common helical problem.
Gluing
- Run a thin, continuous bead of vane glue along the full length of the base. Thin. A heavy bead squeezes out, cures proud, and creates a lump the next vane sits unevenly against.
- Set the clamp firmly against the shaft and hold or lock it for the glue's stated set time, usually 10 to 30 seconds for a vane-specific cyanoacrylate.
- Release the clamp with a slight twisting motion so you do not lift the vane you just set.
- Rotate the jig to the next position and repeat.
- After all vanes are on, run a small dot of glue at the leading edge of each vane. That leading edge takes the airflow and the rest impact, and it is where failure starts.
Let the arrows cure fully before shooting, which for most vane glues means at least an hour and ideally overnight. Cure time is where impatience costs you a dozen arrows.
Clearance: the step people skip
Before you fletch eleven more, shoot the first one and check for contact. Dust the vanes and the rest launcher with foot powder or dry shampoo, shoot one arrow, and look for wipe marks. A vane clipping the rest arm or the cable guard produces tears in paper tuning that no rest adjustment will close, and it also shreds vanes over time.
If you find contact, rotate the nock rather than re-fletching. Most nocks turn in the shaft, and a small rotation often moves the offending vane clear entirely. Only if rotation fails do you need to change vane orientation or drop to a shorter vane.
Fixing common problems
- Vanes peel at the leading edge. Surface prep, almost always. Alcohol, dry fully, and add the leading edge glue dot.
- Vanes lift in the middle. The clamp is not seating along the full length, common with helical clamps on small diameter shafts. Use a clamp matched to your shaft diameter.
- One arrow flies differently. Check vane spacing against the others. A vane set an eighth of an inch further forward changes the balance and the airflow.
- Vanes tear off in a target. Usually foam friction on a bag target rather than a fletching fault. Broadhead-rated foam targets pull arrows more easily.
- Broadheads still will not group. More rotation is the first lever. Go from 2 degrees offset to 3, or from offset to helical, before moving the rest again. The full procedure is in the broadhead tuning guide.
What fletching does to the numbers
Three vanes plus glue run roughly 8 to 24 grains depending on length and material, and all of it sits at the rear. That lowers front of center, so a build that measured 13 percent bare can drop a point or two after fletching. Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between offset and helical fletching?
Offset lays the vane straight but angled a few degrees relative to the shaft, so the vane stays flat against the surface. Helical curves the vane around the shaft, following a spiral. Helical spins the arrow faster and steers fixed-blade broadheads better, but it costs a little speed and needs a helical clamp. Offset is easier to apply and works well with mechanical heads and field points.
How much offset should I use?
Two to three degrees of offset covers most hunting setups and gives useful rotation without much drag. Target archers shooting field points often use one to two degrees or straight fletching for maximum speed and minimum wind drift. If you shoot fixed-blade broadheads, take the higher end of the range or go helical, because the blade surface needs rotation to stabilize.
What glue should I use for vanes?
A vane-specific cyanoacrylate or a purpose-made archery vane adhesive. Standard hardware store superglue is brittle and lifts at the leading edge after a few shots. Whatever you use, surface preparation matters more than the brand: wipe the fletch area with rubbing alcohol, let it dry fully, and for slick vane bases use the primer pen the vane manufacturer supplies.
Three vanes or four?
Three is the default and works for almost everything. Four vanes, usually shorter ones in a 75 by 105 degree pattern, add steering with similar total surface area and are popular for target shooting and for stabilizing large fixed blades. Four vanes also mean more nock rotation options for clearance. The downside is more work per arrow and slightly more drag.
How long should vanes be for hunting?
Two inches is the common minimum with mechanical broadheads, and most fixed-blade shooters use 2 to 3 inches, or a 4 inch feather on traditional setups. Longer vanes steer harder heads better but cost speed and are more affected by wind. If broadheads will not group with field points and the bow is tuned, adding vane length or helical is usually more effective than moving the rest further.
Should I use a wrap?
A wrap is not required but it makes life easier. It gives a clean, consistent gluing surface, it makes re-fletching simple because you peel the whole wrap rather than scraping carbon, and it adds visibility for finding arrows. It costs 6 to 12 grains at the rear, which slightly lowers front of center, so account for it if you are targeting a specific FOC.
