Short vs Long Axle to Axle Bows: Which Is Better?
Choose a longer axle to axle bow, 32 inches and up, if you shoot past 40 yards, have a draw length over 29 inches, or hunt open country: it is more forgiving and holds steadier. Choose a shorter bow, under 31 inches, for ground blinds, saddles, and thick cover where clearance and weight matter more than the last few percent of stability. Around 30 to 32 inches is the compromise most hunting bows land on.
Axle to axle length is the spec that quietly determines how a bow feels to shoot. Longer bows are more forgiving and shorter bows are easier to carry and manoeuvre, and the industry has spent twenty years converging on roughly 30 to 33 inches because that is where the trade balances for most hunters. What is right for you depends on your draw length and where you actually shoot from.
The verdict
Go longer, 32 to 34 inches, if your draw length is 29 inches or more, you shoot 3D or target, you hunt western open country where 50 yard shots are realistic, or you simply want the steadiest hold you can get. A longer riser and a shallower string angle forgive small errors that a short bow punishes.
Go shorter, 28 to 31 inches, if you hunt ground blinds, saddle hunt, move through thick timber, or your shots are inside 30 yards. A short bow is easier to keep clear of the blind roof, easier to carry, and easier to swing on a shot that comes from behind you.
The tie-breaker is your draw length. A 31 inch draw on a 29 inch bow produces a severe string angle that makes consistent anchor and peep alignment genuinely harder. If your draw is long, buy the longer bow and stop optimising for manoeuvrability you will not miss.

String angle is the real mechanism
At full draw, the string forms a V with the apex at your release. On a long bow that V is shallow, so the string sits across a broad, gentle angle and your anchor is easy to repeat. On a short bow the V is sharp, which does three things: it makes the peep rotate more per unit of string movement, it makes small changes in head position produce larger sight picture changes, and on a recurve it pinches your drawing fingers.

It is not that the short bow is inaccurate, it is that the long bow hides more of your inconsistency. Where short bows earn their keep
Clearance. A 34 inch bow in a pop-up blind with the chair set for a comfortable sit is a frustrating combination, because the lower cam finds the floor and the upper cam finds the roof. Saddle hunting has the same problem in a different geometry, since you shoot around a tree at body angles that a long bow does not accommodate cleanly.
Weight and carry matter too. A pound of difference between a 3.4 pound short bow and a 4.5 pound long bow is noticeable on a multi-mile pack in, and it is noticeable on a climb into a saddle. Short bows also swing faster on a shot that develops quickly, which is a real advantage in thick cover where you will never get a leisurely setup.
What axle to axle does not change
Speed is not a function of axle to axle length in any simple way. Short bows were once faster because aggressive geometry was easier to build compactly, but modern long bows routinely rate as fast or faster. Compare published IBO figures on the specific models rather than assuming, and remember IBO is measured at a 30 inch draw with a 350 grain arrow, which is faster than you will shoot. Brace height belongs in this conversation
Brace height, the distance from the string to the deepest part of the grip, is the other forgiveness spec and it often moves together with axle to axle.
